Operator Trucks
Many users do not realise that these lift trucks also fall into
the legislative framework. Consequently this type of lift truck
is sometimes overlooked when it comes to training in the workplace.
It does not look dangerous or powerful but in fact is a major course
of accidents. If a motorised type is in operation at your premises
then the training and certification is required. Most motorised
versions have a lifting capability of around 1 tonne and will lift
loads clear of the floor, and transport them around the site, or
load vehicles. Some have a capacity of 2 tonne and are capable of
lifting loads to a height of 3 or 4 metres.
Typically
operator courses will include:
Introduction
Theory & Videos
Pre-shift checks & recording procedures
Truck Stability
Lifting capacities
Battery Charging
Vehicle Loading/Unloading
Safe operating practices
Knowledge & Practical examinations
Course
durations will vary slightly, but typically will be:
Powered

Novice - 2 trainees, 1 instructor, 1 day
Experienced - 3 trainees, 1 instructor, 1 day
Re-test/Refresher - 3 trainees, 1 instructor, 1

Pedestrian Trucks
Novice - 2 trainees, 1 instructor, 1 day
Experienced - 3 trainees, 1 instructor, 1 day
Re-test/Refresher - 3 trainees, 1 instructor, 1

All
operator training courses are designed to train the basic skill
requirement and associated job safety knowledge of basic Lift
Truck operation, This is the nationally recognised levels of
skill, ability
& safety as laid down by the accrediting bodies and as in the
Approved Code of Practice (L117) relating to section 2 of the
Health
& Safety at Work Act 1974.
It
is estimated that each year there are over 7000 reportable injuries
involving lift trucks. These injuries, some fatal cause suffering
for those involved and their dependants. They also create a heavy
cost on the employer’s business; even an accident not involving
injury may result in costly damage to trucks, buildings, fittings,
and the loads being handled. Forklift trucks accidents are frequently
associated with lack of suitable operator training. Such training
is essential and is the first step in reducing injury and damage
to key personnel.
